Use the Consultation Feedback Form

What is it?

This is a checklist going through different phases in the consultation with space for a rating of each and room for comments. It allows a systematic approach to assessing the consultation.

Who developed it?

This appears in the GPET Assessment During Training handbook

How is it done?

This can be used either during direct observation of the registrar by the supervisor or to assess a video of the registrar’s consultation. The form is filled out while watching the consultation, and can then be discussed.

What does the supervisor do?

The supervisor watches for areas done well and areas to be improved and then encourages the registrar to think of other potential ways of doing things (even those things which were well done).

Practice tips

1. Both supervisor and registrar fill out the form and compare notes afterwards. Explore any differences in assessment.

2. Look for opportunities to discuss issues in other domains as well, such as practice management or legal issues that can arise in the consultation
