Use the Attitudinal Grid |

What is it? This is a questionnaire consisting of opposing value statements, both expressed positively, to explore (sometimes unexamined) attitudes and values. Who developed it? The questionnaire has been attributed to Roger Neighbour and was written by Penny Trafford in the UK How is it done? The registrar and the supervisor both fill out the grid, marking their responses on the visual scale. What does the supervisor do? Once the questionnaire has been completed by both parties, the answers are compared. Areas of difference can be explored. It is important to note that no answer is right or wrong, but exposing and exploring our values and assumptions can be a very useful exercise. Practice tips 1. If you and the registrar have some similar attitudes, play devil’s advocate with each other - examine the attitude and ask what would be different of we held the opposite attitude. 2. Ask how these values play out in consultations - what if a patient has contrary attitudes or values? Further Information Contact Tim Senior
