I want to assess the registrar’s management in cases chosen at random
Use the teacher’s guide to Random Case Analysis |
|
What is it? A guide for the trainer in discussing cases the registrar has seen in a tutorial. It gives background on the aims of random case analysis and lists the three types of case which may be seen and gives examples of questions to be ask the registrar. Who developed it? These are a collation of 2 pages from the Well Close Surgery GP training website in the UK. How is it done? The trainer will probably be doing just this sort of thing already! It may be useful to read the document before a tutorial to clarify and reflect on your aims in doing random case analysis. Have a copy of the questions to hand or give them to the registrar to consider in the tutorial. What does the supervisor do? There are 2 particularly useful aspects to random case analysis: 1. You get to assess areas that the registrar is not asking for help on, thereby actively finding areas which may need improvement. 2. It can be used not just to tell the registrar what to do in a given situation, but to encourage reflection on why did I make that decision at that particular moment. The supervisor gets to act as a facilitator in this process and find out what is happening to their patients! Practice Tip Broaden the conversation outward from just the clinical issues. Look for opportunities to talk about practice systems or population health, law or ethics. Look for alternative ways the consultation might have gone.
