WentWest provides support to General Practice through education, resources and practice support visits with regards to Identification and Item Numbers.
The life expectancy for both male and female Aboriginal people was estimated to be almost 17 years less than for the general population. It is important to identify those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent to ensure that their health care needs are addressed. Data from the 2006 Census shows that there are more than 10,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the WentWest region - one of the highest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populated areas in Australia.
WentWest is able to provide General Practice with information, training and support for MBS Items specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, including a full range of health checks and follow-up services.
