General practitioner antenatal shared care is the division of care of the pregnant woman between the general practitioner and the hospital antenatal clinic. After an initial assessment and referral by her general practitioner, the pregnant woman attends the hospital antenatal clinic for 'booking in' and obstetric assessment. She then attends her general practitioner for routine antenatal care. This is continued until late pregnancy when the patient returns to the clinic. The hospital is responsible for the intrapartum care.
Antenatal shared care is an option for pregnant women with no risk factors indicating adverse maternal or foetal pregnancy outcomes. GPs can consult and/or refer to the hospital obstetric team if problems arise. GPs participating in antenatal shared care will be supported by, and must follow, an agreed protocol.
The antenatal shared care package will be sent to you, and includes:
In joining the ANSC program, GPs are required to demonstrate current medical registration, equipment availability to listen to foetal heartbeats and a commitment to the quality improvement program.
Educational opportunities are available throughout the year, including lectures, workshops and antenatal clinic tutorials. Details of upcoming sessions are made available to all registered GPs.
Below are examples of the types of meetings/education sessions available for GPs to attend:
