Our Program - Registrars

Under the Australian General Practice Training program (AGPT), WentWest is accredited to train Australia’s future General Practitioners in western Sydney. WentWest administers the three-year full-time AGPT course, which commences after the intern year. After completing the AGPT program and passing the FRACGP examination, a GP is qualified to practise unsupervised in any non-procedural general practice in Australia.

The AGPT program offers postgraduate vocational training to those selected medical graduates who wish to undertake general practice in Australia. The aim of the program is to produce graduates who have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Undertake competent unsupervised general practice

  • Meet their community’s health care needs

  • Support the current and future goals of the Australian health care system

Full-time enrolment details

Year 1: Gain hospital experience relevant to general practice.

Year 2: Learn from hands-on experience in basic and advanced general practice while based in accredited training practices for two six-month terms.

Year 3: Gain further experience in an accredited training practice and to work independently. During the year you will take the examination for Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). You may choose to spend up to six months of this year in a post where you can develop advanced skills in Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics, or academic general practice.

Part-time training is also available.

Gaining the necessary experience

Part of your educational development as an AGPT registrar will be a six-month placement in a rural practice. This experience will equip you to work in an independent, non-procedural general practice anywhere in Australia. The rural term is complemented by a six-month term in an outer urban practice. Several practices within the WentWest region are classified as "outer urban".

Your two placements will help you make the transition from hospital medicine to general practice under the supervision of accredited GP Trainers. WentWest has developed a network of highly-skilled, experienced GP Trainers who provide clinical teaching as well as direct observation and feedback on communication skills.

To complement your clinical learning during placements, in the year of basic and advanced GP training you will attend workshops on such topics as: Paediatrics and Young People’s Health, Dermatology, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Ethnic Health, Indigenous Health, Aged Care, and Mental Health. These workshops are delivered at various sites throughout the region, including at the Aboriginal Medical Service Western Sydney in Mt Druitt.
