Under the Australian General Practice Training program (AGPT), WentWest is accredited to train Australia's future General Practitioners in western Sydney. WentWest administers the three-year full-time AGPT course, which commences after the intern year. After completing the AGPT program and passing the FRACGP examination, a GP is qualified to practise unsupervised in any non-procedural general practice in Australia.
After spending time in hospital, registrars are placed in general practices under supervision of a GP trainer. These consist of six-monthly attachments over a period of two years. One of these attachments will be in a rural area and one will be in an outer metropolitan practice. Towards the end of training the registrar sits the examination for FRACGP.
During the training, as the trainer you are responsible for supervising and teaching the registrar across the whole range of General Practice. This is done with the support of an experienced Medical Education team at WentWest, who run release workshops for the registrars and upskilling sessions for the trainers, as well as being available for more informal support and advice regarding registrar teaching.
