Practice Overview

AMS Western Sydney is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Medical Service and is run by local Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people. Our vision is to provide the highest standard of client care whilst incorporating a holistic approach toward diagnosis and management of illness. We are committed to promoting health, wellbeing and disease prevention to all clients. We do not discriminate in the provision of excellent care and aim to treat all clients with dignity and respect.

We have been providing primary care health services for the Aboriginal community of Western Sydney for 20 years. We have over 50 staff, including a multidisciplinary team of Aboriginal health workers, Nurses, GPs and allied health workers. Several specialist clinics run on site to increase the access of our clients to a wide range of health services. There is a strong focus on preventative health and health promotion. We have been supervising and mentoring GP Registrars since 1990 and have a strong commitment to teaching excellence including the provision of cultural mentorship to Registrars undertaking a term at the AMS Western Sydney.

Practice Description

We are located in Mt Druitt and are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5 pm. There are 4 to 5 GPs every day and we use a drop in appointment system for GPs and appointments for allied health and specialist staff. We use a mixed system of paper files and Medical Director 3. We are AGPAL accredited and fully equipped to provide comprehensive primary care services.

Practice Staff

We currently have 12 GPs, all working part time. There are 3 GP Supervisors and 2 senior cultural mentors for GP Registrars. We have several large teams including a child and family team, a social and emotional wellbeing team and a chronic care team.

Practice patient base and services

We have a large patient base of over 17,000 clients, averaging visits from 4000 individual clients per year. We cater for Aboriginal people and their families living in or visiting the Western suburbs of Sydney.

Our teams provide primary health care including general checkups, immunisations, pregnancy care, family planning, pap tests, pregnancy tests, diabetes checks, heart checks, child health, drug and alcohol counselling and treatment, minor surgery, social and emotional wellbeing care, sexual health care and community nursing. Dental services are available by appointment for Aboriginal clients only. We also have visiting specialists who are available to see Aboriginal clients after referral from the GP. Some of the specialists available are: paediatrician, psychiatrist, obstetrician, chiropractor, naturopath, speech therapist, rheumatologist, podiatrist, diabetes educator, ENT surgeon, optometrist and audiologist.

Information for Registrars

Our preference is for part time Registrars working 2 - 3 days a week to maximise our ability to offer a deeper learning experience in Aboriginal health to as many Wentwest GP Registrars as possible. However, full time GPR positions are at times also available. GPRs work within the AMSWS opening hours from 9 am to 5pm Monday to Friday and there is no after hours.

GP Registrars can expect to gain a broad clinical experience, particularly in the areas of chronic disease including diabetes and vascular disease and paediatrics. In addition to that they will gain improved understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and health and how to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary health team. Working in an Aboriginal community controlled setting is a satisfying and enriching life experience.
