I want to assess the registrar’s consultations

Use the Cambridge Calgary Skills Log

What is it?

This is a checklist of skills used in different phases of the consultation with a rating on how well they are carried out and room for comments. The skills are taken from the well-regarded Cambridge-Calgary consultation model.

Who developed it?

This was developed by the East Cumbria Vocational Training Scheme in Northern England.

How is it done?

This tool is used to assess a video of the registrar’s consultations, but it could also be used when sitting in with a registrar. The form is filled out while watching the consultation, and can then be discussed.

What does the supervisor do?

The supervisor assess how well the skills listed are demonstrated in the consultation. He or she can then help the registrar to improve their skills or find other ways of demonstrating them.

Practice tips

1. Both supervisor and registrar fill out the form and compare notes afterwards. Explore any differences in assessment.

2. Look for opportunities to discuss issues in other domains as well, such as practice management or legal issues that can arise in the consultation
