Use the Videotaped Consultation and ECTV Debrief

What is it?

This is a set of forms to be used in an ECT visit looking at a registrar’s videoed consultations. It contains:

· A consultation assessment form

· An form for a consensus statement about the assesment

· A registrar feedback form on the teaching

· A sample video consent form

· Instructions on using the tool

The forms could also be used by a supervisor to assess their registrar’s consultations.

Who developed it?

This tool was developed by GPET

How is it done?

The registrar videos a session of general practice The supervisor and registrar discuss the consultations using the tool and reach a consensus about what was done well and areas for improvement.

What does the supervisor do?

The supervisor looks for what the registrar did well and areas they could improve. It is also helpful to find alternative ways of running the consultation or managing the patient to broaden the repertoire of skills.

The supervisor may also have to help with technical issues with the camera and practice issues regarding privacy and consent.

Practice tips

1. Make sure there is at least one consultation with a degree of difficulty for the registrar on the video.

2. The registrar may want to watch the tape themselves before the tutorial as a way of self assessment.
