The Wentwest Trainer-Registrar Education and Assessment Toolkit (TREAT) is a site containing tools for use by GP trainers in providing formative assessment to their registrars. The idea is that the tools collected on this website will be useful in determining the strengths a registrar has and the areas they need to improve, especially in areas which can be difficult to assess.

There are a couple of other excellent websites (see links) which present tools for the assessment of registrars, but with these you need to know which tools you are looking for.

This website tries to work from the other direction - by asking what you want to do with a registrar and directing you to a tool help to do this with a registrar.

There are 24 tools listed here which cover all 5 domains, though there is a predominance on consultation skills. The use of these may allow assessment and discussion around areas which are harder to teach.

The main use of these tools is as a catalyst for discussion with a registrar, and this is how I envisage them being used. For this reason, I have not worried too much about reliability and validity, as using them to measure against a criteria or against previous performance is not the main intention. With this is mind, if you are using them with this intention, please beware of this lack of validation (in most cases) for this type of usage.

A note about copyright

I have tried not to put any copyrighted material on this website, and I have tried to acknowledge authors where I am aware of them—I have tried to find out who the authors are for each tool. However, if I have breached any copyright, please accept my sincerest apologies and let me know, so we can remove any offending material.

Please do let me know if you have any comments to make about the website or the tools.

I would like to thank Wentwest, particularly Martin Wiltshire and Eszter Fenessy, for supporting this project which I carried out while on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait off the far far north tip of Queensland. For this reason all the photographs on the site are of the Torres Strait Islands taken by my wife, Jo, or myself.
