Any good handyman (and I don’t include myself among this group!) needs different tools for doing different things. “If you only have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.” But sometimes you need a screwdriver, or a spanner. Similarly, the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for General Practice are so diverse and varied, that different tools are needed to assess registrars across a broad range of these skills. The best way to build up an accurate picture of the ability of a registrar is to make different assessments at different times. Some of these assessment may make use of these tools. |

Formative assessment is a way of seeing how a registrar is currently performing with a view to giving them guidance and feedback to help them improve. It is not summative assessment, which is designed to see whether a registrar has reached the desired standard to progress further. None of the tools here are designed for this, they are all designed for a starting point for reflection, discussion and feedback. An analogy is like driving a car. It is important to keep your eyes open so you can spot where you are headed and avoid going in the wrong direction before problems arise. Formative assessment is merely the activity of looking where a registrar is now and giving guidance on how to steer to where they are heading. Assessments, though do not have to use tools and they do not have to have scores. If you ever find yourself thinking “I’m glad my registrar is on this weekend” you have made an assessment of their ability of some sort. |
