I want to assess the registrar’s recognition of emotion in the consultation
Use “Touching Feelings in the Consultation” |
|
What is it? This is a method where emotions felt by the doctor and patient can be uncovered and discussed. Who developed it? This is available on the UK GP Training.net website, based at Well Close Square Surgery in North East England. How is it done? This can be done using a videoed consultation, but is probably even more effective when sitting in observing. What does the supervisor do? The supervisor writes down in one colour ink what he or she thinks the patient and the doctor are feeling at various points in the consultation. The registrar adds their recollection of the emotions in a different colour afterwards. The supervisor can then discuss similarities and differences in the emotions. Practice tips For some registrars even realizing that emotions in the consultation are a legitimate source of discussion is surprising. Use the tool as a discussion starter to learn how to recognise and manage emotions in the consultation. Further Information Contact Tim Senior
